Julia Zeto Donates Blood

On July 16, 2024 Cabell County EMS, partnering with the American Red Cross, held our very first blood drive.

Cabell County Employees and members of the public alike took time out of their busy days to donate blood. Every open slot was filled, including additional spots we had opened up to give everyone a chance to donate.

During the drive we were able to collect 58 units of blood. Additionally, over 50% of the donors were from Cabell County EMS.

A Time Capsule was also placed inside of the stone, containing challenge coins, current administration information, and other various forms of media relating to Cabell County EMS and Cabell County as a whole.

This was our 4th Cornerstone Ceremony, preceded by Station 6 in the West End of Huntington, Station 7 in Milton, and Station 8 in Barboursville.

New CCEMS Blood Initiative

Cabell County EMS Whole Blood Transfusion

Beginning July 1, Cabell County EMS will be able to administer blood to any patients with significant blood loss. We started an initial program in November 2023 specifically for trauma-only patients, but this will allow us to help the community in more ways.

“After several months of lots of hard work with both here and with St. Mary’s, who supplies our blood, and the office of EMS, we were able to start that program in November which allows us to carry blood and administer it to our patients out in the fields before they get to the hospital,” said Julia Zeto with CCEMS.

CCEMS Holds Ground Breaking and Naming Ceremony for New Station

New Cabell County EMS Station #3

On Thursday, May 9th, 2024, Director Gordon Merry and Cabell County Commissioners Kelli Sobonya, Liza Caldwell, and John Mandt Jr. held a ground breaking and naming ceremony for the new Cabell County EMS Station #3.

The new station will be named in honor of the the late Nancy Cartmill. Nancy was the mayor of Barboursville from 1993-2001, Cabell County Commissioner from 2003-2022, and President of the County Commission Association of West Virginia from 2015-2018.

Nancy was very instrumental and a major supporter to Director Merry and Cabell County as a whole. She always tried to do what was right for the people of Barboursville, Cabell County, and West Virginia. She was a great friend and mentor to many.

CCEMS Begins Training for Prehospital Blood Administration

CCEMS Blood Training

Recently, Cabell County EMS was approved by WVOEMS for a pilot program to administer blood products in the 911 setting, making us the first ground agency in West Virginia with the capability to carry and administer blood products on a 911 scene.

Thanks to a partnership with St. Mary's Medical Center, CCEMS will have whole blood available for our patients suffering from hemorrhagic shock. The program is expected to be in service this fall. The administration of blood products in the prehospital setting has been shown to drastically improve patient outcomes. We are excited to not only provide this life saving service to our community, but to pave the way for EMS agencies across the state to do the same.

On August 10, providers began receiving the necessary education to safely transfuse blood products. All ALS providers are educated on the benefits, risks, and general processes of blood transfusions, protocols for administration of blood products, and hands on training of new equipment. Education material was approved by WVOEMS.

CCEMS would like to thank CSX for awarding a grant of $5,000 to help towards the purchasing of necessary equipment.

CABELL COUNTY MAPPING AND ADDRESSING PROJECT

The WV State Mapping and Addressing Board devised a formula for all counties to follow for the purposes of assigning “city-style” address to all structures in a county making it easier for first responders to locate an address. The purpose was to eliminate duplicate road names, assign addresses where they don’t exist, provide numbers that make sense to responders and establish an addressing method that would allow growth and or change. All 55 counties in WV have been given this mandate and they all have been directed to follow the same formula. Cabell County has currently completed the areas of Salt Rock, Branchland(Cabell County portion), Glenwood, Culloden, Lesage, Ona, Huntington 25702(outside city limits), Huntington 25704(outside city limits).
